Weather for Practice

Just a reminder to check weather.com for updates to the current and future weather. We will try to keep emails going out and post on the front page of the website but depending on the situation we can't always get to the computer. If there is lightening or thunder in the area the Rec Center will make us clear the pool and pool deck for 30 minutes.

Senior Swimmer Daniel Brownstein will be attending Trinity University in San Antonio this fall. Daniel graduated from Bellaire HS in the top quarter of his class with over a 4.2 GPA. He had a tough time deciding where to go to college, but ultimately chose Trinity University in San Antonio where he received a wonderful academic scholarship.  He isn't sure what he wants to do yet, but has a passion for history and a strong interest in both chemistry and biology. Daniel will continue swimming with the Rice Masters group this summer and will also work at the JCC as a lifeguard instructor, a lifeguard, and will teach swimming lessons all summer. Daniel has plans of keeping involved and active in the pool while at school.

The RICE Aquatics coaching staff wishes Daniel best wishes as he heads into this new chapter of his life.

Swimming in the news ... sort of.....

Apparently years of gripping a block and kick board helps in situations like this .....

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Eight-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Jenny Thompson says would-be robbers punched her in the face in a failed bid to steal her scooter outside Boston.
Thompson told WBZ-TV on Wednesday that she was riding in Brookline on Monday night when a vehicle stopped behind her with its headlights out. She said two people got out, punched her, pushed her down and tried to grab her ride.
Thompson held onto the scooter and screamed for help, forcing the assailants to flee on foot. The 37-year-old suffered a cut on her nose and several scrapes.
Police say three teenagers were arrested later Monday night with stolen scooters, and they are investigating whether the teens were connected to the Thompson incident.
Thompson is one of the most successful American Olympians, with 12 medals overall. Her most recent medals came in the 2004 Athens Games.

Parents- Many parents have inquired about the coaching staff and private lessons. This email will hopefully help answer the questions I have been receiving about private lessons. RICE Coaches do offer private lessons and have been giving them to those who have inquired about lessons. While we do not endorse the idea of having to take a private lesson on top of a normal practice schedule, we do feel that a lesson or two working on fine points of the strokes or turns can go a long way for a swimmer. Lessons run for 30 minutes at a rate of $40 per lesson. These lessons are to supplement techniques and skills the swimmer is already learning at practice. I have listed Coach Kyle's and my availability during the week.
