HOUSTON - With a full year of hard work and some anxious seniors leading the way, Rice competes for the Conference USA title in women's swimming at the 2010 C-USA Championships across town at the University of Houston Recreation Center Natatorium this Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 24-27. The 21-event meet begins at 6 pm Wednesday with the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay.

The championship kicks into high gear on Thursday morning. Preliminaries for the swimming events begin at 10 am Thursday through Saturday. The finals for each day's swimming and diving events are at 6 pm. C-USA students with ID may get into the meet free of charge. Admission prices for the event are: $5 for single-session tickets for youths (or a youth's full-session pass for $10); and $10 for adults per session (a full-session pass for adults is $25). Tickets are available at the UH natatorium an hour before the start of that day's session.

The Owls had another outstanding year under head coach Seth Huston, now in his eighth year at the helm of the Rice program. Coach Huston is looking forward to the challenging task ahead, including the Owls' talented veterans and surprising freshmen.

"I have been pleased overall with our final preparations for CUSA Championships," Huston said. "Our biggest hurdle is getting through mid terms before and during the meet.

" Pam Zelnick, Shelby Bottoms and Angela Wo have really carried the team this year," Huston said. "I am sure they will be ready to go and have a great meet. We have the potential to score with a lot of depth at the meet and some of the leaders of that group should be Erin Mattson, Stephanie Wei, Kait Chura, Alex O'Brien, Karen Gerken, Alison Godbe, Ashten Ackerman among others.

"CUSA Championships is a seven session event," he added. "Our ability as a team to come in mentally focused to compete in each session will dictate our final team finish. That aspect as much as any other changes the team standings. I really want each individual to focus on being their best this season. Our team really has had a great season of training. Confidence and process focus are keys to each individual performing at the level they are capable.

"We want to have a total team meet; spirit, cohesiveness, competitiveness, and speed. If we meet those standards we will have a meet to be proud of."

Group 3 an 4 Parents/Swimmers - With the weather looking bad for tonight we most likely will not be hopping in the pool for an extended period of time. Here is what I would like to do according to your swimmers upcoming meet status.

Group 3 and 4 swimmers attending the swim meet this weekend. Arrive for 5:30 practice as scheduled for this week. We will do some visualizations in the wet room as well as stretching and possible race preparation. Swimmers should arrive with normal swim gear and suits on. I would also like for them to have some loose pants/shorts and t shirt that they can be comfortable in and move around in. 5:30 - 6:45 pm

Group 3 and 4 swimmers not attending the swim meet this weekend will have drylands in the wet room 6:30 - 7:30pm. Swimmers should arrive with normal swim gear and suits on. I would also like for them to have some loose pants/shorts and t shirt that they can be comfortable in and move around in. If conditions look like they are getting bad on the roads there is a chance this practice will be cancelled. Please check the website prior to leaving for practice. Their will be an update posted no later than 5:30 pm.

Please double check the news link for the practice schedule of your swimmers group. We had many swimmers arriving late or at the wrong times yesterday.

See you at the pool,

Coach Jason

Rice Aquatics and Recreation Center Use

The coaching staff will be passing out RICE Aquatics badges and lanyards to swimmers during practice this week. All RICE Aquatics age group and senior swimmers will need to have their RICE Aquatics ID badge and lanyard with them and visible at all times upon entering the recreation facility. We are instituting this policy for the safety and security of all patrons while in the recreation center. As spring approaches many new camps and clinics with children will begin to be offered at the RICE Rec Center, we want our members to be distinguishable from other patrons.

Families will receive an extra pass if requested so they can enter the recreation center to pick up and observe practice. Please have the ID badge visible as well while in the facility. If your badge is misplaced you can purchase a new lanyard and badge for $5 from one of the coaches. We will be using the lanyard and plastic badge cover through out the year and updating the badge itself for each session.

Please understand that without this badge you could be denied access or removed from the facility.

All Rice Aquatics members have access to the locker rooms and competition pool only during practice times. Please refrain form using the leisure pool, recreation are, and/or workout area. Please do not abuse the privilege of our use of the recreation center.

Thank you,

The Rice Aquatics Coaching
