For Swimmers continuing into the Spring Session (Dec 27th - April 22nd) I am awaiting approval from the Rec Center on our schedule for the week of December 19th.
  • Most groups will have practice up until the 23rd of December. The week of the 19th will be an adjusted schedule with morning - mid afternoon practices.
  • There will be No Practice on December 24th, 25th and 26th.
  • December 27th - 30th will be at the West University Pool. I am awaiting lane usage and times from the West University staff before sending out a schedule. Again expect a mid morning to afternoon practice schedule.
  • We will be giving out a special "Winter Survival" T shirts to those swimmers who make every practice from Dec 19th - Dec 30th. Coach Paul, May and myself will be documenting attendance through out the break. We would love to make this a LARGE order!
The winter schedule will be posted under Groups and Schedules, posted on FB page, posted on blog and emailed out no later than tomorrow.
See you at the pool,

Recovery Nutrition

From USA Swimming

Knowing how much carbohydrate, protein and fat to get in a day is good. But knowing whenyou should be getting those nutrients is even better. In general, follow these guidelines for incorporating carbohydrate, protein and fat into your day.
¨       Spread carbohydrate intake out over the course of the day (i.e. smaller meals and frequent snacks). This keeps blood sugar levels adequate and stable.
¨       Eat some carbohydrate before morning practice. Note: This can be in the form of juice.
¨       Eat carbohydrate in the form of a carb-electrolyte drink, such as Gatorade or Powerade, during workout IF workout is 90 minutes or longer. Gels are also acceptable.
¨       Eat carbohydrate and protein within the first 30 minutes after practice. This enables the body to replenish glycogen stores and repair muscle tissue. This is perhaps the most important time to eat!!!!
¨       Eat again (something substantial, like a real meal) before two hours post-practice has elapsed. This is critical to maximizing recovery!!!!
¨       Incorporate fat into the day at times that are not close to workout. Fat is necessary, but contributes little to the workout or immediate post-workout recovery period.
Part of the reason good nutrition is critical during recovery has to do with the fact that the body is extremely good at making the most of what it is given. Following exercise, the body is very sensitive to the hormoneinsulin. Insulin is that hormone that rises every time blood sugar rises. In other words, every time a swimmer eats carbohydrate, which causes blood sugar to rise, insulin goes up. Well, it’s insulin’s job to remove sugar from the bloodstream, and it does so by facilitating its storage as glycogen. Glycogen, the storage form for carbohydrate, is what the body taps into for fuel when exercise is very intense. This can happen quite a bit during a tough workout, which is why it’s important to see that glycogen is replenished before the next practice.

The American College of Sports Medicine, American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada Joint Position Statement on Nutrition and Athletic Performance states that:

“After exercise, the dietary goal is to provide adequate energy and carbohydrates to replace muscle glycogen and to ensure rapid recovery. If an athlete is glycogen-depleted after exercise, a carbohydrate intake of 1.5 g/kg body weight during the first 30 min and again every 2h for 4 to 6h will be adequate to replace glycogen stores. Protein consumed after exercise will provide amino acids for the building and repair of muscle tissue. Therefore, athletes should consume a mixed meal providing carbohydrates, protein, and fat soon after a strenuous competition or training session.” (ACSM, ADA, Dietitians of Canada, 2000, p 2131)

In addition, research (van Loon et al, 2000) has implicated immediate post-exercise carbohydrate ingestion (1.2 g/kg/hr for 5 hrs) in the enhancement of glycogen re-synthesis.

Coach Kyle

Parents - Attached is a message from Coach Kyle notifying the membership of his upcoming departure from RICE Aquatics.

I wanted to let everyone know that I have accepted a position as a Special Education Aide with the Pasadena School District and I will be leaving Rice at Christmas break.  I have accepted this position so that I can spend more time with my family.

Saying goodbye to all the swimmers that have touched my life will be the hardest part of this decision.  I have loved coaching for Rice for the past year and a half and I want to thank everyone for allowing me to coach their children.  Rice has grown so much since I have joined the team and I have really enjoyed seeing our swimmers improve!  There’s nothing but great things in store for Rice Aquatics swimmers!
I will be letting the swimmers know about my decision at practice this week and I would really like them to get the news from me.

I thank you for all of your support!
Coach Kyle

I wanted to personally thank Kyle for the hard work he has put in with RICE Aqautics, RICE Women's Swim Team, and the Masters swim team. The coaching staff wishes him the best on his new journey in education. Coaching is a selfless job position, one in which you are working with young athletes not only with swimming but also with bigger picture issues as well.  While I am sad he is leaving our team and swimming; I am very proud that he is continuing to help, mentor and teaching young children and adults in the field of education.Currentlly there are no plans for moving groups around or lead coaches for groups. I will be sending out an email with updated information later in the week in regards to Group 4 Navy and Senior 1. Kyle will be working through the week of the 19th so if you get a chance to catch him on the pool deck please take the time to say thank you and goodbye.

See you at the pool,

Coach Jason

Champs Meet Run Down.

Parents - Just a quick update on the Champs meets that are coming up. We will be doing a Winter Champs meet T shirt and will  be adding $10.00 to the entrie cost for each swimmer entered in the meet. If you are wanting your swimmer excluded from receiving a shirt please email here with that request.

Fall Champs @ PACK. (9-14 year olds) Entries due Today.
This meet is for most of the swimmers that have been attending the 9-14 Jr. meets. Swimmers can swim any event even with a NT. Swimmers are not eligible to swim events they have a GULF Champs time standard for. You can find the timestandard here. All swimmers qualified should be striving for 2 of the 3 sessions offered. We are wanting to get multiple relays in the meet for all age groups.

GULF Champs @ FCST (9-14 year olds) Entries due Monday 28th.
This meet is for swimmers 14 and under that have Gulf Champs time standards. Swimmers are allowed to only swim the event they have the time in and the same distance above and below. For example if a swimmer has the 100 Fr cut they can also swim the 50 fr and 200 fr at the meet. Depending on number of events qualified for swimmers may swim in both the Fall and GULF Champs meets. All swimmers qualified should swim in every session qualified.

Senior GULF Champs @ AGS (15 and Over) Entries due Today.
This meet is for 15 and Overs regardless of time standards. The meet will be swam as a Prelims SCY and Finals LCM. Please note the Friday session is an AM session.

8 and Under Champs Entries due Monday 28th.
This meet is for all 8 and Unders regardless of times and events swam. We are looking for a big turn out from the 8 and Unders.
Reminder that all swimmers in Group 1 and 2 are striving for IMX ready events and swimmers in Group 3 and above should be swimming IMX Extreme events. While this meet is a labeled meet we are still working in new events in with the Champs meets in Febuary/March as our goal for the season.

RICE Food Drive

RICE Fights Hunger

The RICE Student Advisory Committee (SAAC) is sponsoring a food drive to help fight hunger in the Houston area. The Women's swim team is participating and in some friendly competition with ohter athletic departments to see who can get the most food donated. If you would like to contribute rice or canned goods to the cause the womens team has a drop off box inside the pool lounge for collection. If you can't make it to the pool your self you can send your swimmer with it in their swim bag and a coach will help them get it in the donation box. The drive is running November 5th - 12th.

Thank you for your support in the effort and with RICE Athletics.

See you at the pool,

Coach Jason

Parents - With the season now in November we will start to have a few cold fronts moving in that will lower the out of pool temps. I wanted to pass on a couple tips to making sure your swimmers keep warm before and practice. The most important thing is to dress in layers. With many practices starting in warm weather and ending in cooler nights its important to come prepared for all types of weather. Packing a longsleeve shirt or sweater in the swim bag is essential. Parkas, Jackets and extra towels are a great option as well. A good option for swimmers in the younger groups that are still low in body fat is hot apple cider in a thermos. This is something they could sip on between sets or extended period on the wall. I will be posting sign ups for parents to bring in a large thermos of hot cider for groups as an option for getting volunteer hours.

A couple notes regarding our recent gear order:
Items are beginning to role in to our screen printer but there are also some items that are back ordered.

Saturday Practice

We will have practice for the following groups tomorrow 8:00 - 9:30 am:

Group 3
Group 4 White and Navy
Senior 2 not attending the meet this weekend.

I would love to have a large group stay after the meet and watch the Miami vs RICE meet at 11:30 pm. The meet will run around 2 hrs in length. I am going to be running the computer system so I would like anyone under 16 to have an adult with them. This is a great oppurtunity to watch a collegiate swim meet. Dual meets go much more quickly than Age Group USA meets.

On a side note: Volunteer hours can be earned by having your responsible older swimmers time at these collegiate meets anyone in Group 4 and above is capable of doing this ;)

See you guys at the pool,
Coach Jason

On Decking at Swim Meets

Parents - If for some reason you miss the deadline for a meet sign up you can still have your child swim in the meet. You are able to sign up the day of the meet in what is called an on deck. Here are a couple notes:
  1. On Deck entries are taken at the clerk of course table at the pool. This is usually on the pool deck somewhere and sometimes is next to where heat sheets are sold and awards.
  2. Entries are double the cost and must be payed directly to the host team with Cash or Check.
  3. The host team has a form you will need to fill out with all of the important information. You will need your swimmers USA ID which is MMDDYYFFFMLLLL  Month/Day/Year/First/Middle/Last ( Example 010181JONPRYAN) If your swimmer has no middle initial or 3 letter last name an * goes in its place.
  4. There is a list of events at the table to make sure you choose the right numbers and events. If you have your swimmers best USA swim time you will need to enter them at this time. Make sure to mark yards or meters depending on the meet.
  5. Once entered they will be placed into these events at the meet. This is the same as circling them in for the events. If you enter them in Saturday and Sunday events they will not be on the circling sheets either day but will appear on the heat and lane assignments.
  6. Make sure you have discussed the on deck with a RICE Aquatics coach prior to on decking them.
  7. Swimmers should not scratch events to on deck a different event unless they have coach approval.
  8. All swim meets have a maximum event number per day that can not be exceeded. If exceeded by an on deck this fee will be passed down to the swimmers account.

Typically the parents working at the Clerk of Course are very helpful with the whole process.

See you guys at the pool,

Coach Jason

Catch the Spirit Camp

Good evening (or morning by the time you get this).  I am emailing as head coach for the USA Swimming Gulf hosted Catch the Spirit Clinic on SUN OCT 16 for novice swimmers.

The deadline has been extended to MON OCT 10.

Currently we have about 15 swimmers in each session. While this is a great coach-swimmer ratio, I would like to have at least 20 in each session to have that critical mass of energy. Will still be a great coach-swimmer ratio.  The cost is $25.00 and the swimmers get the USA Swimming Catch the Spirit T-shirt and other stuff (e.g USA Swimming temporary tattoos, wrist bands, etc.).

We have a nutritionist, Sarah Seppa, presenting an interactive 30 min nutrition talk for the 10&Younger session and more 'prep-for-training and competition' talk for the 11-14 year-old session.

Please consider forwarding this email and/or application to your novice swimmers.   Parents can mail application to Clinic Manager Nicole Rembach (address on the attached application) or email her atnrembach@earthlink.net  or me at jamescrampton@hotmail.com.

Also, I will be taking applications at the HSC meet this OCT 8-9. Hillary Martinez(FCST) and Andre Smith(SPA) will be taking applications at the FCST meet OCT 8-9 and Dakota Phillips (SSS) will be taking application at the BTA meet on Sunday Oct 9.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, suggestion, etc.

Thought for the Week

Inspiration can come from all different places and I rescently had some via a You Tube video. RICE recently bought an underwater camera, part of the companies promotional department sends out weekly videos using their products. This weeks was a couple that is base jumpers. In the video the man said "The key to happiness is having dreams and the key to success is fulfilling those dreams." I think with swimming Dreams/Goals are what drives us. These dreams are often not spoken but internalized within the athlete. By doing so there is no risk of let down or disappointment because they are never spoken or written. Go ahead and write down your 5 biggest goals in swimming. "Swimming in the Olympics" should not be the default make them more attainable and personal. Then take these dreams and go out there and do what it takes to make them happen.

Signing Up for Swim Meets

Parents and Swimmers - I wanted to send out a quick email regarding signing your swimmers up for swim meets. Prior to getting into the details a quick reminder that we will have a "New to USA Swim Meets" Parent Meeting on Wednesday, September 28th from 5:00 - 6:00 pm. This is a must attend for any parents with swimmers new to USA swimming. We have this meeting once a year so even if your swimmer wont be attending the first meet you will want to attend for future meets.

Many of you may have already received emails regarding the upcoming meets that have been posted on our website. As we get info on the meets and add them to our site an automatic email goes out by group for the meet. Because it is sent by group and not age you may recieve an email for a meet that your swimmer can not attend. Please disregard emails that do not apply to your swimmers age or current time standards. In this email there will be basic info for the meet. Start and Finish Date, Registration Deadline, Click able link to "attend this event", the event link for more information and a basic description of the meet.

To begin comtting your swimmer to this event click on the "attend this event" link. This will brring you to the event sign up page. You should see your swimmers name listed on this page. By click their name a new page appears with a drop down box and a comment box. You can eitehr select "Yes, please sign up ____ for this event" or "No, please do not sign ______ up for this event". Select which applies to your swimmer. It does make the registratoin process easier for the coaching staff if you select to "do not commit" instead of not selecting an option. You can also leave a comment in the comment box such as " we can swim on Saturday an Sunday" or "we can swim on Saturday but have to leave no later than 2:00 pm". Any additional information you leave will help the coaching staff when choosing entries. If you log in and commit your swimmer with a good lead time to the event it will allow the coaching staff to discuss entries with your swimmer. When no information is left the coaching staff will assume your child is swimming in every session of the meet.

Once you select to "commit them to the event" a new page will appear with event options for the meet. (If the meet file is not yet available this option will not appear.)  You can then select events from the ones available. These are used as suggestions from the swimmers when the coaches begin the entry process. The coaching staff will have select the events that your swimmer will swim in the meet. These may or may not be the ones suggested through the sign up process. If your swimmers events have been accepeted they will have a check mark next to them. If they have been rejected there will be a stop sign next to them. Any event with out a check mark should be viewed as not yet approved.

More information will be covered in a litte more detail at the parent meeting as well as the actualy pre meet, day of and post meet process.

See you at the pool,
Coach Jason

Reminders

Parents - Just a few reminders.
  • Recreation Center Usage - The Rec Center and Recreation Pool (Small One) is only for use by Rec Center members. If you are interested in gaining membership you can talk to the front operations desk on your way to the pool. (There is a wait list for community memberships).
  • Drop Off/ Pick Up - There is no permanent parking or stopping (flashers included) on the inner loop in front of the recreation center. Drivers must pull all the way down toward the pool. If you child is not ready you must then continue to loop around the innner loop. If you are wanting to walk your child out of the pool or wait for them at the curb you must park either in the hourly pay parking or purchase a parking pass. I have attached information below on attaining a parkign pass. RUPD will be monitoring the area in front of the Recreation center and issuing tickets. This is the main area for the RICE Bus system to stop and pick up, the bus can not be blocked along the street. Anyone can ride the bus labelled " inner loop" to get to the West Lot 3 faster.
  • Parking for RICE Aquatics
Parking on the Rice campus is at a premium.  You can pay as you go in the central parking garage across the street from the recreation center for $2 per 35 minutes or at the north visitor lot at entrance 20 off Rice Blvd. or at the west lot #1 in front of the Alice Pratt Brown Building.  Parking at these spots is $1 per 35 minutes.
A better option is to buy an early bird/evening bird parking permit for $65 per semester or $115 for a year.  Parking permits are available in the central garage offices across the street from the recreation center.  Your name goes to the parking services as well and you may also present your Rice ID.  There is a $25 proxy card purchase at the time of registration for a parking pass. Click here for a map of campus parking. Cash or Check only.

Post Work Out Drink

I found this recipe on the web and have tried it at home myself. So far my kids and I have loved it and find it to be "desert" like. You can change it up and add things in as well.

2 Chopped Frozen Bananas ( Have the kids chop and freeze them the night before)
1 Cup of Milk. (Taste Great with Skim - Whole)
2 Tbs. of Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup Chocolate Chips
2 Tsp. Vanilla extract.

Blend on low then med and serve!

I have substituted an edge white chocolate protein powder for the chocolate chips found it to be a slightly healthier version with more protein in each cup. My choice of protein powder is Jay Robb's Egg White Chocolate Protein Powder; which can be found online but also in HEB and most health stores.

1st Day of Practice

Parents and Swimmers,
Welcome to RICE Aquatics and the 2011-2012 season. I wanted to thank all of you personally for being apart of our team for the 2011-2012 year. Your swimmers and families commitment to the program means a great deal to myself and the entire coaching staff. We welcome the opportunity to get to know each and every one of your swimmers over the next few months and hopefully years.
Most of the teams communication will be through email, our website, facebook page and blog. We will supplement this with handouts, our announcement board in the lounge area and announcements to the swimmers. Over the next couple months there will be many emails coming your way regarding the swim team and your swimmers groups. Please take the time to read these if they pertain to your swimmer. I will try to minimize the quantity of emails I send. Many basic swim questions will be answered in our upcoming parent meetings for each group. These dates will be emailed out no later than Wednesday of this week. Please make every attempt to attend these meetings.
With today being most of our swimmers first day of practice please read the following points to make sure everything goes as seamless as possible:
  • All swimmers must have their ID visible to gain access to the pool area, if you missed the hand out we will have a parent located in the building to the side of the gates passing out ID's. Swimmers should put these on a necklace or lanyard for the easiest access into the building each day.
  • If you are wanting to walk your swimmer into the building please park in the Norh Annex lot, West Lot 1 or Parking Garage. Do not park along the street as you will be ticketed by RUPD.
  • Once your swimmer is on the pool deck have them sit under the covered area nearest the starting blocks. They can find their lead coach to find out where they will be practicing. Lead coaches are as follows:
    • Group 1 - Coach May
    • Group 2 - Coach Paul
    • Group 3 - Coach Jason
    • Group 4 Navy - Coach Kyle
    • Group 4 White - Coach Jason
    • Senior 1 - Coach Kyle
    • Senior 2 - Coach Jason
  • Swimmers should have their name on their equipment in several places. I will have a sharpie on hand to help tag their gear so its not lost.
  • We will be doing some intros and instructions out of the water today to start off but make sure your swimmer is suited up for practice prior to the start time.
  • Its HOT outside so water bottles should be lining the pool deck and the coaches will be encouraging the swimmers use them through out practice.
  • In addition to the heat the sun is nice and bright so if you need to apply sunscreen have them do so prior to practice so we can ensure it stays on when the hop in the water.
Again please look for additional emails this week and as always check our facebook page and blog as well. Thank you again for being apart of the RICE.
See you at the pool,
Coach Jason

Team Outfitting Day - Senior and Age Group

Parents - With the new season we will be finalizing a switch from TYR products to NIKE. This change relates mostly to our outfitting: Suit, Bags, Parkas, Clothing and etc. The college team made the change from TYR to NIKE two years ago and the customer service, quality of products, and delevery of products has been impressive. If your swimmer currently has a TYR product that you purchased they will still be able to wear it to practice, meets (excluding team suits) and etc. We are however offering a new NIKE team suit and needing every active swimmer attending meets to purchase and wear it for all non champ meets.

Texas Swim Shop will be at RICE on Thursday August 25th 5:00 - 7:00 pm to take suit orders and get everyone geared up for the fall session. Each groups equipment needs are listed on our website under the Parents or Swmmers links and "Equipment List".

We will also be passing out our official swimmer badge and parent badges for the Fall 2011 sessions. All swimmers and parents must have these to enter the Rec Center during practice times.

A couple updates on the returning swimmer week.

Paerents- I wanted to thank those who have already signed up onlien for the returning swimmer week through the event sign up page. I wanted to clarify a couple things:
  1. Swimmers should sign up for the event if they are intending on returning for the Fall 2011 session. Even if your swimmer is out of town and can not make the returning swimmer week of practice. We will use this to help form groups for the fall.
  2. Swimmers who swam the summer session have first priority to signing up and then we will open up to those who swam the spring and fall sessions. 8.6.11
  3. No payments or registration papers are accepted at this time. These are being updated for the new session.
  4. Our first day of regular practice is scheduled for August 29th (pending approval from Rec Center.) Once finalized this will go out via email and website.
  5. If you have no intention of swimming in the fall please decline the event.
See you at the pool in a couple of weeks,
Coach Jason

We are excited to keep the momentum going for the 2011 season.
